Practice the door before you knock it

Every trade has a place to practice. Roofers practice on a mock-up before they work on a customer’s house. Pilots practice in a simulator. Roofing sales reps practice on… real homeowners. The ones in your best neighborhoods, on your best storm days.

That’s an expensive place to learn.

What a rep needs to practice

A good door pitch isn’t memorized. It’s a conversation that survives pushback. The things reps actually need reps on are:

  • The opener. Starting a conversation with a stranger who didn’t ask for one — usually with something that has nothing to do with roofs.
  • The first no. And the second, third and fourth. Most homeowners say no several times before they mean it. Reps who expect that stay calm and keep the conversation going.
  • The common objections. “We just had it looked at.” “My son-in-law is a roofer.” “We’re not filing a claim.” Each one has a better answer than walking away.
  • The ask. A clear, low-pressure request for the free inspection.

Role-play works — when it happens

The best way to practice has always been role-play with a trainer or a teammate. It works. The problem is that it rarely happens. The trainer is busy, the teammates are knocking, and role-play in front of the team makes new reps freeze.

Practice with an AI homeowner

That’s why we built the AI pitch trainer into BuilTEN. An AI homeowner answers the door with the objections reps actually hear. The rep talks or types their pitch right on their phone. If the pitch works, the homeowner agrees to the inspection. If it doesn’t, the door closes — just like the real thing.

Then the rep gets a score and specific coaching: what worked, what lost the door, and what to try next. Managers can see every rep’s practice scores, so you know who’s putting in the reps before they’re on your best streets.

Practice never counts toward a rep’s Daily 10. It’s practice. The real points come from real doors.

Five minutes a day

A new rep who runs a few practice doors every morning before they head out will hear more objections in a week than they’d hear in a month of real knocking. They’ll get to the real door already knowing what to say after the first no.

That’s the whole idea behind BuilTEN: train the daily habits, and the company gets built.

All in. BuilTEN.
